My Lord,
Referring to my despatch No. 250 of 23rd instant in which I informed Your Lordship of the death of the late Postmaster General and Colonial Treasurer, I have the honour to state that steps are being taken to assure myself of the correctness of the accounts and other documents.
I have been considering the appointment of a suitable officer to act in the vacant post. Mr. ..., provided he is otherwise recommended and considered, has a good claim to the place (in regard to which I will minute further in another paper) but he should be distinctly given to understand that no amount of confidence in a subordinate officer justifies his exterior in dispensing with proper checks and supervision, such as signing Collectors' Accounts and other documents, without inquiry.
